Melatonin Supplement Label Fraud: What the 2017 Study Found

Melatonin supplement quality varies more than most people realise — and the gap between what a label says and what’s actually in the capsule can be significant. This post covers what a 2017 research study found about melatonin supplement accuracy, why it happens, and what to look for to avoid it. Informational only. Not medical advice.*

The 2017 Study

In 2017, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine tested 31 commercially available melatonin supplements — capsules, tablets, and liquids — from major retailers. The findings were significant.

More than 70% of products tested deviated substantially from the melatonin content stated on their labels. The actual melatonin content across tested products ranged from 83% below the stated dose to 478% above it. Some products that labelled themselves as containing 1mg were found to contain nearly 10mg. Others that claimed higher doses were found to contain a fraction of what was stated.

The researchers also found significant lot-to-lot variability in some products — meaning the same product from the same brand tested differently from batch to batch.

Why Does This Happen?

The dietary supplement industry in the United States operates under FDA regulation — but enforcement is complaint-based and reactive rather than pre-market. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, supplements are not required to have their formulas reviewed or approved by the FDA before going to market. The cGMP regulations (21 CFR Part 111) set standards for how supplements must be manufactured and tested — but compliance is not universally verified.

Many supplement brands outsource manufacturing to third-party contract manufacturers with limited quality oversight. Some manufacturers source raw materials from overseas suppliers without adequate incoming testing. Some simply don’t test finished products with the rigour required to catch label inaccuracies. The result is that a product can reach retail shelves with a significant gap between its label and its actual content.

This is not a fringe problem. The 2017 study tested mainstream products from mainstream retailers — not obscure online-only brands. It represents a systemic quality issue in the category.

Why Melatonin Specifically?

Melatonin is a hormone active in the milligram range. The gap between 1mg and 10mg is physiologically meaningful. A product that claims 5mg but contains 25mg is not a minor labelling error — it’s a tenfold overdose relative to the stated amount. For a hormone supplement taken at bedtime, this matters in ways that an inaccurate vitamin C tablet would not.

This is why manufacturing standard, testing protocol, and supply chain transparency are not optional considerations when buying melatonin — they’re the most important ones.

What to Look For

  • Own manufacturing facility — Brands that manufacture in their own facility have direct control over the process. Brands that outsource do not.
  • cGMP certification — 21 CFR Part 111 compliance means documented manufacturing records, batch testing, and quality disposition before products ship.
  • Made in the USA — Domestic manufacturing is subject to FDA oversight. Imported raw materials relabeled domestically have a different risk profile.
  • Clean ingredients — A pure melatonin product should have melatonin and a minimal excipient. Complex ingredient lists in a “pure” product deserve scrutiny.
  • Transparency — A manufacturer who publishes their facility location, manufacturing standard, and formula codes is showing you what others hide.

Our Standard

Perfect Vitamin Products manufactures at our Bella Phytologic facility in Santa Rosa, California under full 21 CFR Part 111 cGMP compliance. We have referenced the 2017 label accuracy study on this site since we became aware of it — because it validates exactly why we built our own manufacturing operation rather than outsourcing.

Every batch we produce is documented, tested, and quality-released before it ships. We publish our formula codes. We don’t hide behind generic “manufactured to GMP standards” language — we operate a specific, documented facility with a specific, documented quality process.

Our melatonin range: 60mg Capsules — Bulk Powder — Full Range. Our manufacturing story: How We Source & Manufacture Our Melatonin.
