Why Melatonin Stops Working: What Most People Get Wrong

If you’ve taken melatonin consistently and noticed it seems to work less well over time, you’re not imagining it. This is a commonly reported experience, and there are several reasons it happens. This post covers the most likely explanations and what people typically explore next. Informational only — not medical advice. Consult your healthcare provider.*

Melatonin Isn’t a Sedative

The most important thing to understand about melatonin is what it actually is. It’s not a sedative or a sleeping pill — it’s a hormone that signals the body that nighttime has arrived. It works with your circadian rhythm, not against consciousness.

This distinction matters because it changes how you interpret “working” and “not working.” If you take melatonin and feel sedated, that’s actually not what the supplement is designed to do. If you take it and simply sleep well without noticing anything, that’s closer to the intended effect. Many people conclude melatonin “stopped working” because they’re looking for a sedative-style effect that was never what melatonin does.

Why People Report Reduced Effectiveness Over Time

Dose mismatch. The most common explanation is simply that the dose is wrong for the individual’s situation. Standard OTC melatonin products (0.5mg–5mg) are appropriate for mild, occasional circadian disruption. People with significant ongoing disruption — from shift work, chronic blue light exposure, or age-related decline in production — may find lower doses insufficient for their situation. This is a conversation to have with a healthcare provider.*

Timing issues. Melatonin is sensitive to when it’s taken relative to your intended sleep time. Taking it too early, too late, or inconsistently can all reduce its effectiveness. The timing window matters more than most people realise.*

Light exposure isn’t being addressed. Melatonin supplements cannot fully counteract ongoing light suppression. If you’re taking melatonin but continuing to use bright screens until the moment you take it, you’re working against yourself. The supplement and the environment need to work together.*

Label inaccuracy. A 2017 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that over 70% of melatonin supplements tested deviated substantially from their label claims. If a product that says 5mg actually contains 1mg, the perceived effectiveness will naturally decline. Read more: Melatonin Supplement Label Fraud.*

Receptor sensitivity changes. Some researchers have explored whether melatonin receptor sensitivity changes with prolonged supplementation. This is an area of ongoing study — we are not in a position to draw conclusions, but it is a factor some healthcare providers consider when advising on melatonin use.*

What People Typically Explore Next

People who have used low-dose melatonin without finding it sufficient typically explore two paths: adjusting timing, or exploring higher doses under the guidance of a healthcare provider. High-dose melatonin — 10mg, 20mg, 30mg, 60mg, and above — is a distinct category from standard sleep supplements, with a different research basis and a different user profile.*
